KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Missouri man will deploy for his fifth trip to assist the Red Cross with hurricane relief efforts, but it's the first time he's deployed during the coronavirus pandemic.
“COVID has really put a crimp on our style,” David Moyers, of St. Joseph, siad. “However, we've all gone through training, as far as cover, distance and cleanliness. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations) is what we go by."
Moyers, a U.S. Navy veteran, has been a Red Cross volunteer since retiring from the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 2015. His first deployment was to North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.
His bags were packed Monday afternoon, and he was waiting on the “go” call after Hurricane Marco made landfall near Texas.
He will be working on damage assessment and reporting his findings to Red Cross National on this trip to help determine how the hurricane affected the area.
Moyers said a lot of volunteers are not able to deploy “due to health reasons” amid the pandemic, and the organization needs more volunteers who can give two weeks’ worth of their time.
“If I come in contact with a COVID, I'll have to quarantine and I won't be able to come home until after a 14-day quarantine,” Moyers said.
Those interested can sign up to volunteer on the Red Cross website.
