In honor of Women's History Month, Stand Up KC held a free community film screening for more than 200 people at Tivoli Theater in Westport on Thursday.
The group's women's committee hosted the event with special guest speaker Rosalyn Pelles, a civil rights and worker rights leader for more than 50 years.
"There's a lot happening today in this country that requires some people to take a stand and change things, so I think the main thing is that people need to be willing to do that," Pelles said.
Standing on My Sister's Shoulders is an award-winning documentary featuring women in Mississippi who risked their lives to fight for civil rights. Organizers say they hope it inspires people to see themselves as leaders in the community.
