KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Starlight officials announced Wednesday that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused the venue to cancel or postpone all remaining 2020 shows.
The stage was hopeful of moving forward with a Broadway production of Godspell in August, with crowds spaced apart and other precautions in place for venue and participants.
In a release Wednesday, a spokesperson said the increased costs of the COVID-19 precautions made the effort not “financially responsible."
“Starlight has been a part of the Kansas City landscape for nearly 70 years, and we hope to return next summer with a fantastic—and packed—season under the stars,” Rich Baker, Starlight president and CEO, said in the release. “In the meantime, we will need Kansas Citians’ help to do so.”
Starlight said 2020 will be the first time in the 70-year history of the venue that no shows will be performed. As a result, officials estimate the venue will lose more than $4 million in 2020 revenue.
The venue said ticket holders can turn ticket money into a donation to Starlight, add it to their balance at the venue for future purchases or request a refund.
