Strong storm causes damage across KC

Posted

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A family of four was at home when strong winds pushed a tree through the roof of the house.

Severe storms caused damage and flooding across the metro area Saturday evening.

Flash flooding and strong winds in North Kansas City left damage for homeowners.

At 21st and Clay Street, a large tree fell on a home.

Ryan Jensen, his wife, and their two kids were on the first floor of their North Kansas City home Saturday evening when they heard a giant boom.

Jensen described the whole house shaking, saying that at first, they weren't sure exactly what had happened.

"Very scary especially for the kids. We didn’t know what was going on," said Jensen. "Things were falling off the walls, so you don’t know whether it’s an earthquake or something happened to your house or a lightning strike."

The inside of the house is badly damaged by the tree and the water that leaked in through the roof.

"We’ve got holes… several holes in the roof and into our bedroom and our bedroom has water in it… actually, we’ve got water on all three floors," said Jensen.

In other areas North Kansas City, the heavy rain caused problems for drivers.

Edward Thomas shot video of people driving through several feet of flood waters. While the flooding problems were short-lived, the damage done to Jensen's home will take a while to clean up.

"It was about a four-story tree," said Jensen. "It was pretty tall."

Luckily, Jensen's friend owns a tree company and came out to help prevent further damage.

"Just trying to make it safe so we don’t have any further damage tonight and tarp it up for him so the rain doesn’t continue to get inside," said Anthony Dooley, owner of Dooley Bro's Tree Service.

Jensen says his family is shaken up but they are just grateful no one was hurt.

Dooley says a tree this size will take several hours to remove and they'll need to use a crane.
