Student drivers take advantage of empty streets

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As more people are working from home and staying inside, the roads are a lot less busy in Kansas City.

Student drivers are taking advantage of the open streets and putting their permits to good use.

"I've really tried to focus on more interstate driving now since the roads are empty, " said Paul Turberg, a student at Twin City Driver Education.

Turberg, 14, and his mom have been driving around and getting practice during the stay-at-home order.

Instructor Jack West told 41 Action News that he is glad students are still able to practice driving, but it is impacting his business.

"We haven't been able to get in the car, so our employees are essentially at home. We're not working. We're not doing anything. The impact has been negative for us," West said.

West added that he is looking forward to seeing his students and their growth over this time.

Until then, Turberg said he will continue practicing safe driving and following the practice guidelines given to him by his instructor.
