KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- This is a story about a true champ. 41 Action News first introduced you to Caesar just days before Christmas 2016. He was found alone, frozen and malnourished. At the time, he could barely walk.

It took months for veterinarians to help Caesar overcome the health complications after being left to die. He struggled through a bad back leg, bad teeth and a bad eye. Then, he was diagnosed with cancer.

For the past four months, Caesar has undergone chemotherapy to fight cancer.

Dr. Jeff Dennis is a veterinarian with BluePearl pet hospital. He has been conducting the chemotherapy treatments for Caesar.

"Chemotherapy in dogs is very different than it is in people," Dennis said. "The number one goal is not to cause side effects so the dog does not get the same amount of chemotherapy a person would."

Thankfully, Caesar's cancer is treatable.

Dr. Dennis said that as of Thursday, Caesar's cancer is in remission and he is a happier dog.

"He has gained a good 15 pounds since his first treatment," Dennis said. "He is eating better and is a much happier dog."

Caesar is living with a foster family who has taken excellent care of him. According to the Missouri German Shepherd Rescue group, as soon as Caesar completes his rehabilitation he will be eligible for adoption.

"Caesar is sort of a miracle dog," Nancy Campbell with the Missouri German Shepherd Rescue Group said. "The reality is the cancer came at the end, and he has come through it like a champ."
