KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Women who recently came out of the criminal justice system were offered a helping hand on Saturday.

The Help KC organized a one-stop shop event that included assistance ranging from basic necessities to resources for jobs and education.

Candance Wesson, founder of the Help KC, said these women are often overlooked when they are released.

"When it comes to women, especially if you've been formerly incarcerated, that's a topic that's not really talked about a lot,” Wesson said. “Now when you hear about re-entry and prison reform, you automatically think of men and women kind of get overlooked so we wanted to make it exclusively for them."

The event took about one month to organize and 150 people attended.

Any women who are in such a situation can contact the Help KC through the group’s website or by calling 1-844-HELP4KC or 816-227-6020.
