Tips for dealing with an ice-covered vehicle

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sleet and freezing rain in Kansas City Friday morning is guaranteed to create slick conditions and cover surfaces in a layer of ice - including your vehicle.

41 Action News created a list of tips to make your experience with icy conditions easier.

Things not to do include pouring hot water on the cold surface of your car. The combination of hot and cold temperatures could break the windshield.

Instead, buy liquid de-icer for windshields and wiper blades. Or create your own de-icer with two parts alcohol and one part water.

Once your car door is open, apply cooking spray in the door frame of your vehicle to keep the doors from refreezing.

To help with traction, use cat litter.

Another tip includes bringing your ice scraper inside your home so it's not trapped inside your car.
