KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Several people were transported to area hospitals Sunday afternoon after a multi-vehicle collision on 23rd St. near I-435.
According to police, a black Dodge truck was coming down the I-435 exit ramp when it rear-ended a Toyota stopped at a red light facing the intersection. The impact forced the Toyota into the intersection, where it hit a red Hyundai and a brown Dodge pickup.
The Hyundai veered into a metal traffic signal pole in the median of the roadway, where it came to rest.
Four people were taken to area hospitals. A 3-year-old girl from the Hyundai and a teenaged girl from the Toyota are both listed in critical condition. Two other people had non-life threatening injuries.
Police took the driver of the black Dodge truck into custody for questioning.
Sheryl Schreck, says this crash brought back a horrific memory.
“I felt kind of a sense of Deja Vu,” the Independence mother said. “When I saw it, I recognized it immediately.”
About a year ago, Schreck’s 30-year-old daughter, Jennifer Crawford died in a car accident at the same intersection.
“My daughter was coming from 435 north,” she said. “ She was getting off the 23rd exit and she had an accident there. It was a single car accident. We don’t know what happened. “
To this day, Schreck says it’s still painful to talk about.
“I feel for the parents of this young lady, I feel for the whole family,” Schreck said. “We all still cry.”
