KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A group home with locations in Topeka and Lawrence says migrant children separated from their families are among those being held at their homes.
KSNT-TV Topeka reports the separated children are being held at The Villages, an organization that has assisted children of many backgrounds since 1966.
In a statement posted on their Facebook page Thursday, The Villages President and CEO Joseph Wittrock said the organization “doesn’t control the paths of children” before they arrive at the facility, but did confirm that unaccompanied children from the federal government are among those in their care.
Wittrock also said that while the organization works to reunite children with their families, it doesn’t have a timetable for how quickly that might happen.
Also on Thursday, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (D – Missouri) released a statement saying despite President Donald Trump signing an executive order Wednesday changing his administration’s policies on family separations, more needs to be done.
“The Trump administration has not yet demonstrated that they are doing all they can to reunite detained children with their families and answer the questions that those of us in Congress and around the country are asking,” Cleaver said in the statement.
