KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Strong early morning storms knock down part of a tree that damaged two homes Thursday.

Part of a tree fell on the homes located on the 5900 block of Cherry Street.

Kansas City firefighters said people in both homes were uninjured but had to leave for their safety.

The tree is on the property of homeowner Emily Randle who described the moments leading to the fall.

“I first heard (a) wind gust. Really large wind gust and then a clattering as it hit my house, the neighbor's house rather," she recalled.

Randle and her husband said the tree is not very old and the incident was not expected.

“We love this tree. It was a big attraction to moving in and we live in awe of it. The canopy is multiple sizes larger than our small bungalow house in Brookside, so we kind of knew it was always a potential, but we hoped to have it a long, long time,” Randle said.

The tree knocked down some power lines.

Evergy arrived on the scene to fix the line and restore any lost power.
