Trooper struck, shot fired, suspect in custody

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper was struck after chasing a drug suspect near Interstate 29 and 50th Terrace early Tuesday morning.

The trooper initiated a chase with a red passenger vehicle around 12:43 a.m. on I-29.

When the vehicle turned off onto Frontier Street, the trooper got out of the vehicle and the suspect turned around and drove at him, striking the trooper.

As the suspect was trying to get away, the trooper fired a shot toward the suspect. MSHP did not say the suspect was hit.

The trooper suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

The suspect, 29-year-old Derek D. Staum of Gardner, Kansas, was later apprehended in Kansas.

The drug and crime control investigation is ongoing. There is no word on Staum is being charged for striking the trooper.
