KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Clay County Sheriff's Department is investigating after two children were found dead in a rural area.
The children, both of whom were under the age of five, were found near 92 Highway and Cameron Road Wednesday afternoon.
A sheriff's department spokesman said drowning and accidental shooting have been ruled out. The medical examiner's office will determine a cause of death.
"The children looked like they were unharmed. But that is something we are going to have to continue to investigate," said Cpt. Will Akin, with the Clay County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators say a mom found her two girls unresponsive at home and ran across the street with the children in her arms to get help from neighbors, who called 911.
It is unclear if the children were found inside their home or outside near a parked car.
Investigators say the mother is cooperating.
Neighbors told 41 Action News off camera the family moved into their home a couple months ago. Some remember seeing the little girls playing in the yard.
"For any parent to lose two children, let alone one, is nothing more than tragic," said Akin.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family to go towards funeral and other expenses.
