KANSAS CITY, Kan. — It’s day 40 of the United Auto Workers' strike against General Motors, but it could come to an end by Friday evening.
UAW workers across the country have been voting this week on whether or not to pass the new four-year contract.
UAW lets local leaders know when to hold meetings that outline the proposal. Afterwards, local committees select a date and times for voting.
Fairfax workers voted Thursday evening , and had until midnight to submit their vote.
Final results are then sent to UAW International.
In order for approval, 50 percent of of voters, plus one member, have to pass it.
The deadline for nationwide voting is 3 p.m. (CDT) Friday.
The terms of the new contract include the following:
- Members get an $11,000 bonus. Temporary workers get $4,500.
- Current full-time temporary workers who have three years of continuous service would become permanent workers next year.
- Getting rid of the $12,000 cap on profit sharing.
According to CNBC, the automaker would invest $7.7 billion in U.S. facilities to keep and create about 9,000 jobs.
Another part of the deal states that UAW will drop its lawsuit to reopen plants GM wants to close.
