KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Frigid temperatures and calls to conserve energy have prompted Union Station to cancel one of its annual light displays.
Union Station said in a tweet Tuesday night it would not move forward with its Mardi Gras display.
Due to the severe winter weather and ongoing energy conservation efforts, Union Station's regular Mardi Gras lighting display has been canceled, and our exterior building lights remain dimmed. Its exterior lights also are dimmed, according to the tweet.
On Monday, Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas announced that the city’s skyline would “go dark” to preserve energy. City Hall’s exterior lights also were shut off.
Evergy and other electric companies began implementing controlled outages on Monday, at the direction of the Southwest Power Pool. SPP coordinates the electric grid in Kansas and portions of Missouri, among other states.
