LENEXA, Kan. — It's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a day for residents to properly dispose of unused, unwanted and expired medications.

Police substations and sheriff's offices across the metro held the event until 2 p.m. on Saturday.

One change this year, in addition to combating the opioid epidemic, is that police are trying to tackle vaping concerns.

"The only thing we're asking is those that have a lithium battery not be disposed of this way," said Danny Chavez, Lenexa Police Department public information officer.

It's a move many are happy about.

"I have my old vaping cartridges at home I didn't even think about," said Raymong Tanguay, who dropped off some medications.

Carl Blessing, who also dropped off medications, said that anything "that can cause a problem on the street needs to be gone."

The Lenexa Police Department also provided a place for people to dispose of unused needles or syringes, which is not part of the national event.

"There's very few options for people wanting to dispose of those," Chavez said. "We decided to go ahead and accept those, and then we will safely dispose of those as a police department."

If you didn't have time to drop off your medications on Saturday, many police stations have a 24/7 bin for you to throw away your medications.
