KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Tuesday, volunteers from the Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City put together care packages with essential items, including toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Kansas City, Missouri, Fifth District Councilwoman Ryana Parks-Shaw worked with city staff to find funding for the purchase of 12,800 rolls of toilet paper and 2,000 bottles of hand sanitizer.

The care packages will be distributed to nonprofits and seniors in need.

“As we’ve seen, this COVID pandemic can have more impact on them in a negative manner,” Parks-Shaw said. “We want to do all we can to keep them safe, keep them home, but get them the necessary supplies they need.”

The councilwoman also is working with the Shepherd’s Center to expand its senior “phone pal” program. Seniors receive phone calls twice a week to check on their wellness through the program.
