KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Leavenworth resident spearheaded an endeavor that has produced thousands of free face masks for the community.

Carla Welborn has given away 6,535 masks since March 29. Five other women have worked with her to sew and iron the masks.

The groups expects to surpass the 7,500-mask mark by the end of June.

Angela Summers, Andrea Fields, Jo Ann Wetzel-Orndorff, Gina New and Catherine Wilcox also have helped with the project, according to Welborn.

The women also make children’s masks. All masks are provided at no cost to anyone who would like one.
