KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office deputy remains on leave after an incident last month involving an inmate at the jail, Sheriff Don Ash said Friday.
The deputy was placed on administrative leave after the Sept. 5 incident, which Ash said involved an altercation between employees and an inmate. Further details were not provided.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which investigated the incident, has finished its review and submitted the case to the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether charges are warranted.
Ash said Friday that with the criminal investigation complete, he has also requested an outside agency to conduct an administrative investigation to determine whether any employees violated policies.
“As sheriff, I hold myself and my employees to the highest moral, ethical and legal standards," Ash said at a news conference. "We are committed to our mission to serve and protect our community, and that includes inmates in our custody."
The sheriff said the administrative investigation will focus on what, if any, internal policies were violated and make a determination about appropriate disciplinary action, if warranted.
Ash said the deputy on leave remains employed by the sheriff’s office.
