Missouri lawmakers question resettlement plan

Posted

Fresh from his trip last week to refugee camps near the Syrian border, Kansas Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer returned to the state capitol in Topeka, Kan. on Monday morning.

Colyer reaffirmed his earlier position that he does not want Syrian refugees in Kansas for safety concerns.

Some Missouri lawmakers also expressing safety concerns got some answers at the Missouri state capitol in Jefferson City on Monday.

Experts told a joint meeting of the Missouri House and Senate budget committees that Syrian refugees are vetted twice-- once by international experts and once by U.S. federal agents.

Lawmakers were informed that the federal government has allocated $4-million to Missouri to help resettle Syrian refugees.

Missouri will have to pay approximately $200,000 to cover expenses for elderly Syrian refugees.
