Man describes encounter with accused cop killer

Posted

Police say the man accused of killing KCK Detective Brad Lancaster also injured at least two others.

Before police captured Curtis Ayers, they say he carjacked a car with two kids in the back and drove to Basehor. That’s when Jeff Scott said Ayers entered his home through an open garage with his gun drawn.

At the time, Scott had no idea who Ayers was or why he was hiding out in his home.

“He was out of it. He was looking around, looking out windows,” Scott said, adding that Ayers stayed for 10 minutes with his gun pointed at him the entire time. “Unbeknownst to me why he was doing that, but now, like I said, the details have come out and it makes sense.”

For 10 minutes Ayers pointed the gun, and Scott said he could only think about one thing. “My 4-month-old twins. 'Please don’t shoot me.' I repeated that multiple times and let him know I’ll give him whatever he wants, take whatever you need, just leave me be.”

Scott’s family wasn’t at home at the time but that may have been what prevented Ayers from hurting him as well.

“I think so, that’s when we started talking about, he said, ‘I have two kids as well.' I think it sunk in with him a little bit, what we had at our house and what my family was and is still thankfully.”

Ayers had closed the garage door with the first stolen car and took off with Scott’s. What Scott didn’t realize at the time was that there were two young kids, who he guesses were only 3 or 4 years old, in the car. When Ayers eventually left, Scott and the two kids in the garage were unharmed.

Still, despite the day’s traumatizing events, Scott’s thoughts the next day were solely with the families of Lancaster and the other victims.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the law enforcement officer and the two other victims,” Scott said.
