Shawnee police are actively searching for a gunman who shot a security guard at a construction site early Saturday morning.

Police were called to 5200 Meadow View Drive just after midnight following reports of someone being shot by an intruder. Upon arrival, officers located a 59 year old Leawood, Kansas resident with gunshot wounds.

As other police officers arrived in the area, a large perimeter was established. The area was searched with multiple K-9 teams and a helicopter, but the suspect was not located.

Detectives were able to interview the victim, briefly at the hospital. He said he was conducting surveillance on some of homes under construction, due to some recent thefts of construction and building materials. He observed a man break into one of the homes under construction. After confronting the man, a fight ensued and the victim was shot.

Greg Prieb, owner of Prieb Homes, says construction site thefts are on the rise and they have recently stepped up patrols.

"This suspect was in the basement stripping the furnace when our security guard saw him." said Prieb.

The victim’s injuries are not life-threatening. He has been released from the hospital.

The Shawnee Police Department released the following description of the suspect: white male in his 30s about 6-feet-tall with a skinny build. He has "scraggly" blond hair that appeared to be dirty. At the time of the incident, he was wearing blue jeans and a white T-Shirt. He was seen driving a white mid-1980s half-ton Chevrolet pick-up.
