Some African-American students struggling financially to attend college have a financial lifeline thanks to the Kansas City, Kan., Black Employees Committee. They organized the 24th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet, held Saturday at the Jack Reardon Convention Center in Kansas City, Kan.
KCK police and firefighters made donations to the Black History Scholarship fund, which will be donated to Donnley Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College. Additionally, money raised from ticket sales will go to the scholarship fund.
I had the honor of being the emcee at the event. KC Jazz band performed and the keynote speaker was Kansas State Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau. She currently serves on the Kansas Legal Services Advisory Board, the Wichita Children's Home Board and is a member of the League of Women Voters. She is the first African-American woman to serve in the Kansas Senate in state history.
Tenth Street Jewelry was honored with the Business Leadership Award. They've been serving the KCK community for more than 60 years.
