KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A grant of nearly a million dollars will help Kansas City, Kansas, police outfit more officers with body cameras and put up street cameras.

A city news release states the department will receive $842,000 in federal public safety technology grants.

$342,000 will towards the purchase of body cameras.

That money, according to the release, will allow the police department to get body cameras on 228 officers.

The body camera project began in 2016.

Chief Terry Zeigler said the body cameras will help with crime fighting efforts and build trust with citizens.

The rest of the grant money will pay for street cameras that provide video in real time, according to the release.

The cameras, placed at intersections in priority areas to battle crime, will give officers and dispatchers information about what's happening as officers respond to a call, according  to the release.
