Kansas City, Kansas police are investigating after a bullet hit Mark Twain Elementary.

Lockouts at Mark Twain Elementary and Wyandotte High School were lifted around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday. USD 500 police department was also placed on a lockout.

A lockout, as opposed to a lockdown, is a situation in which all external doors of a school are locked but the school day continues as normal inside, according to KCK Public Schools chief of staff David Smith.

KCK police said they responded to a shots fired call around 10:11 a.m. When officers arrived, they learned USD 500 employees were outside of Mark Twain Elementary working on the landscaping along with several day labor employees. Police said following a verbal confrontation one of the temporary employees walked off the job site. A few minutes later, the workers heard several gunshots and observed, who they believe to be, the temporary employee shooting at them. He then fled the area.

KCK police said there were no injuries, but the middle school was struck once.

The incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas police department. Officers are asking anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
