OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Overland Park fire crews were called to a house fire at 146th and Nieman just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The family of four heard a loud clap of thunder and one of the children later smelled smoke.

After the smoke detectors went off, the family left the home and called 911.

The family, two adults and two children, have been displaced but do have other relatives they’re staying with.

More than four hours after the initial call, crews were still clearing out hot spots.

Fire officials said the home is a total loss and the cause is likely lightning, though it is still under investigation.

Olathe fire officials told 41 Action News a fire in that town was also likely caused by lightning.
