Overland Park announced Tuesday that Roe Park’s new splash pad is closed until further notice.

"There's a grid underneath the pavement with metal, and it's grounded by copper wire so it's to protect from any stray electricity that might get into the area," Greg Ruether, Director of Park Services, said. "The painted areas, those are protected. It's beyond that that we're not 100 percent sure how far out we need to go."

The architects who designed the splash pad will be working with engineers to come up with a plan.

We caught up with a pair of guys who took their grandkids to Roe Park and were surprised by the closure.

Dick Fuller said, "I picked them up early from school and they changed into their swimming suits in the car. Now we get here and it's very disappointing for them."

Roger Bennett added that his granddaughter, "was disappointed that there wasn't a splash pad and we were disappointed we didn't bring her shoes."

About half of the children at the park on Tuesday were wearing swim gear, prepared to splash. Fuller understands the concern and the city shutting it down.

"Oh absolutely. There's no sense in having any danger available for the kids to step on, especially electricity and water. Safety is a priority," he said.

The splash pad opened last week. The rest of the park is open, but the splash pad will stay closed until further notice.

Ruether said there is no timetable set for the changes because, "We're going to do our best to get it operational but we want to make sure that it's safe."
