Police in Overland Park have decided to put in a reduced speed zone for the area in front of the temporary Brookwood Elementary School building. The zone will reduced the speed limit from 40 to 30 miles per hour at the start and end of school times.

The Brookwood Elementary School building is located near 103rd and Mission.

Many parents were concerned about the speed limit because it was not the 25 miles per hour most school zones require. 41 Action News was there the morning the school started and clocked several drivers exceeding even the 40 mile per hour limit.

City and school leaders have been watching traffic throughout the week and said the speed zone reduction is the first and most immediate step to take based on input from the school district and the public.

Monday afternoon, city and school officials met and agreed to reduce the speed limit for two 45-minute periods, from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and again from 3 to 3:45 p.m., standard times for elementary school zones.

Overland Park Public Works crew members plan to install two solar-powered school zone beacons by the end of the month, if not sooner.
