UPDATE: Overland Park city leaders passed the controversial Brookridge Golf and Fitness redevelopment plan early Tuesday morning.

Rezoning for the development plan passed 7-4. The meeting lasted until 12:30 a.m.

Developers with Curtin Property Company want to spend billions of dollars building retail shops, offices, hotels and entertainment venues. The new plan will keep the remaining five properties intact, along with nine holes of golf.

Despite the council passing a plan to rezone the site for development, a final vote is still needed to go forward.

It could take years before any construction begins.

After years of negotiations, developers say they have a plan that will work for everyone in redeveloping Brookside Golf and Fitness.

Developers with Curtin Property Company will go before Overland Park city council Monday night for approval on its rezoning plan.

The original plan called for 12 houses to be demolished on Antioch Road to make way for retail, offices, hotels and entertainment venues. The new plan will keep the remaining five properties intact, along with nine holes of golf.

“I’ve got three boys and I said, 'Boys you’ll carry me out feet first when I leave this house,'” said homeowner Norma Mitchell.

She has lived in her home for the past 47 years. Mitchell says he husband helped build the golf course decades ago. Even with changes to the plans, she wants the golf course to stay the same.

“When I see big old buildings going up out there where that pretty grass is and a lot of the trees will no doubt be cut down that I know my husband planted, it’s just going to hurt,” said Mitchell.

If the rezoning plan is passed, a final vote will be needed. It could take years for construction to start.

Overland Park City Council will meet Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
