While the Jayhawks basketball team is away trying to make history, a big piece of the sport's history is about to take its rightful spot on the KU campus: the original rules of basketball.
"I think it's going to be pretty sweet," said student Andrew Lee. I'm glad to see the history coming here for everyone to see."
The school is building the new DeBruce Center, with one purpose in mind - to serve as the permanent home of the original rules of basketball.
"I think it's one of the coolest things KU is going to have," said Lee. "It's where they belong, you know, here."
The subject of an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, basketball founder James Naismith's original basketball rules went up for auction in 2010. As the founder of KU's basketball program as well, many believed Naismith's rules belonged in Lawrence.
KU alum David Booth eventually won the bidding for $4.3 million to bring the rules home to Kansas.
"i think that's really exciting just to go to a school with so much history," said student Madison Ernzen. "I think that it's just really cool that it's going to be here for everyone to see."
With the $18 million DeBruce Center scheduled for completion by the end of April, the rules will go on display soon where many feel is right where they belong.
