The search for a man who fled a Clay County deputy during a traffic stop ended on Thursday.
Kevin Leroy Lindeman, 20, was taken into custody in Lawrence, Kansas.
He is charged with two counts of felony assault on a law enforcement officer.
The incident happened near Claywoods Parkway and White Oak in Liberty, Missouri.
According to a probable cause statement, the deputy pulled over a white Ford F150 after he saw it didn't have a front license plate displayed. The deputy asked for a driver's license and proof of insurance, and the driver said he didn't have them but his driver's license is valid.
The probable cause statement reads the deputy could smell marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. He asked the driver to exit the vehicle, and the driver said he was not going to get out. The deputy opened the door and told the driver to exit again, and again the driver was non-compliant.
The deputy grabbed the driver's left hand, said he could smell marijuana and told him to exit the vehicle. The driver then started the vehicle. The deputy struggled in an attempt to pull the driver from the vehicle.
A Liberty police officer arrived on scene. The officer grabbed the driver's head and attempted to pull him from the vehicle, according to the probable cause statement. The driver was able to free his hand, place the vehicle in drive and began to accelerate.
The probable cause statement reads that the deputy and officer were caught in the vehicle by the door and were dragged approximately 15 feet. They were able to stay on their feet and were able to push free. According to the probable cause statement, the Liberty officer ordered the vehicle to stop at gunpoint, and the driver didn't comply.
Police discovered Lindeman's vehicle abandoned.
Authorities obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and found marijuana in the vehicle, according to the probable cause statement.
The deputy suffered minor injuries. The police officer is also OK.
Bond for Lindeman is set for $150,000.
