KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Independence police said they are investigating a homicide at the Cedar Brooke Apartments on Quail Creek Drive.
Police spokesman Ofc. John Syme said police were called to the residential complex at about 4 a.m. on reports of a shooting.
When officers got there, they found one victim dead and another with life-threatening injuries. That person was taken to a hospital.
Police have not identified the victims. Nor have officers described a suspect or said whether anyone is in custody.
Syme said detectives are on scene gathering physical evidence and went door to door to search for witnesses.
"I know there were several people [detectives] are continuing to talk to who were somehow involved. Witnesses, et cetera. We are going to find out more from them," Syme said.
A dog also died in the shooting.
There was a school resource officer on scene helping students get onto the school bus.
Police ask anyone who may know something about the shooting to call the department at 816-325-7300
