LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. — Nine cats were killed in a fire at a fourplex in Lee's Summit Thursday afternoon.
According to a release from Lee's Summit Fire Department, crews responded to call at about 2:37 p.m. at 539 NE Newport Drive. The occupant of the unit was asleep in the living room when she was awakened by the smoke alarm and called 911.
No one was injured.
Crews located 10 cats in the building but only one survived.
The fire originated on the kitchen stove and spread into the living room. The release said the occupant of that unit had just moved in and items had been placed on the stove top and it's believed the controls on the stove were accidentally turned on.
There was smoke damage throughout the rest of that unit but the other three in the building were not damaged.
