A Parkville family is the latest victim in the hoverboard fire scare. The hoverboard was plugged in to charge when it caught fire Tuesday just after 11 p.m.
Southern Platte County Fire Chief Dean Cull said at least two residents were at home and heard popping noises. They came out of their rooms and saw smoke in the home. They put out the fire and took the hoverboard outside.
The fire chief said the popping noises were likely the batteries exploding. He explained that the cheaper hoverboards made outside of the United States typically do not comply with U.S. safety standards and are still a fire hazard.
"You should make sure any hoverboard you purchase has the UL safety seal; and you should never leave the hoverboard unattended," said Cull.
No one was hurt. The fire damage is estimated to be about $10,000.
