Police are searching for one person after a suspect shot at officers during a chase near Smithville Lake on Monday.

Authorities said it started with a disturbance call at Smithville Lake. At least one suspect in a white Toyota shot at a Clay County deputy trying to deploy stop sticks along 169 Highway near the lake. The driver sped south on 169 Highway going more than 100 mph before exiting onto 152 Highway and heading west.

"I mean, it made my hair stand up on end. Especially Smithville Lake, in a public area like that. That's pretty crazy," said Jon Bazzano, public information officer for the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Officers also deployed stop sticks on 152 Highway, but the driver avoided them, according to police. The driver then avoided more stop sticks deployed by Parkville police on 152 Highway approaching Amity.

Police said the car crashed at I-435 and 152 Highway, where two men ran into a heavily wooded area. A third person was captured near the car, according to officials.

One of the two suspects who ran was captured around 8:45 p.m.

Police said they found a gun in the car. They are not sure if the remaining suspect on the loose is armed.

On Tuesday, 19-year-old Miguel Guerrero was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and resisting a lawful police stop in connection to the incident. His bond is set at $150,000.
