The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued the order around 8:45 p.m. Saturday night after a main distribution line broke near the water plant.
The main break has put the whole water system at risk of contamination.
Follow these steps to stay safe:
- Boil the water for a full minute before drinking or cooking with it.
- Do not use ice from an automatic ice maker.
- Disinfect your dishes with a teaspoon of bleach per gallon of clean tap water.
- Make sure to not swallow water during a shower or bath.
Residents should also flush their lines until the water runs clear.
The break was repaired overnight, but the boil order remains in effect until at least Monday. The water will be tested numerous times this week.
The City of Ottawa will have drive thru distribution points available for drinking water if you are unable to boil your water.
The city will be distributing drinking water to residents on Monday, August 29, 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. in the public parking lot west of city Hall on Hickory Street. A one-gallon container of water will be given for each member of your household. The priority is for infants, children and the elderly.
Distribution points were also available at Ottawa High School and Lincoln Elementary School from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Anyone with low water pressure should call the Ottawa Water Plant at 785-229-3690 or 785-229-3750.
