One woman was killed in a fatal crash Tuesday night near 191st and Nall in Stilwell, Kansas.
According to police, 24-year-old Caitlin Vogel of Stilwell was traveling eastbound on 191st around 10 p.m. when a male driving southbound on Nall ran a stop sign and struck her vehicle.
Vogel was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Department says Vogel was an instructional assistant for students with autism in the Olathe School District. The district released the following statement:
"The district is heartbroken by this tragic news. Ms. Vogel has touched the lives of many of our students and families. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends."
James McAllister, 27, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without an ignition interlock device.
The incident remains under investigation.
Ignition interlock
According to the criminal complaint filed against McAllister, he did not have an ignition interlock in his car. An ignition interlock is a breathalyzer which stops a car from starting if someone has been drinking. A court had ordered McAllister to install an ignition interlock.
Lori Marshall with Mothers Against Drunk Driving says it’s not uncommon to see DUI offenders find their way around not using an ignition interlock. Marshall says police officers do not go around checking to see if they have been installed.
“If they make a traffic stop and if it’s noted, they will check for it, but they, they’re just too busy to just routinely and randomly check offenders to see that they have their ignition interlock installed on their vehicle,” said Marshall.
Marshall says MADD would like to see an agency dedicated to making sure ignition interlocks are installed and maintained.
“Where their job would be nothing but to enforce ignition interlock, both the installation on offenders vehicles and also the companies that install them to make sure those installations are being done properly,” said Marshall.
