KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City's Ivanhoe community will soon get a neighborhood golf course thanks to the hard work of one man.

Chris Harris has lived on Wayne Avenue his entire life. He has made it his mission to clean up and improve his neighborhood by turning blighted homes and vacant lots into a small sports oasis.

"Harris Park is all about is just cleaning up our community, educating our community and doing anything we can teach," said Harris. "That's what we want to do. We want to continue teaching and continue to bring new things. Beautification is a key."

He started by creating a basketball court and a playground next came a putting green.

His new project is underway.

"It's a golf desert here in the neighborhood," he said.

A year ago building a golf course was just a vision on Harris' board

Now, construction is underway for the 9-hole pitch and put course.

"We are just trying to open the doors to everyone to play golf," he said.

Construction is slated to take a couple more weeks. Once he gets the first phase up and running, Harris said he will tear down his home to make room for the second phase.

"The real work is just beginning," Harris said with a smile.
