COLUMBIA, Mo. — The publisher of a family-owned Missouri newspaper has resigned after publishing a racist syndicated cartoon.

The cartoon published in Wednesday’s Washington Missourian shows a black man grabbing a white woman’s purse.

She asks for someone to call 911 but the man says, “Good luck with that lady ... we defunded the police.”

The cartoon was published as some protesters call to defund police departments over the death of George Floyd and other instances of police brutality.

Bill Miller Sr. said Thursday that he has stepped down as publisher but is still the newspaper's owner. His daughters resigned Wednesday in protest.
