More than 2,500 people have contacted the state auditor’s office asking when they should receive their tax refund from Missouri.
Teresa Sperry says those anxious people have been calling her pretty often.
“We have received an exceptional amount of phone calls in regards to this. We’re probably getting on average 3 to 5 clients a week that are calling,” said the CPA at Sperry and Associates.
Sperry says everyone should receive their refund by June 30th. She’s been practicing in Missouri for more than 20 years, “This has been the longest in quite a few years.”
Along with the date clients should expect the refunds, Sperry is also giving them advice for next year — file early.
“The longer you wait to file, the more congested the system gets and they can’t process everything quick enough,” said Sperry.
One business owner in Lee’s Summit says he filed his taxes on time and he thinks the state should be held to the same standard.
Seth Allen knows exactly when he filed his tax return, “that’s been two months ago,” he said.
Allen says he’ll never forget the day he filed his taxes this year, because April 15th was also the day he opened his new business, Libations and Company.
“What a better day than tax day to buy a bottle of booze,” said Allen.
The amount the state owes Allen is about equal to a bottle of booze, but he says that’s not the point.
“I’m fortunate that I’m not expecting a whole lot back from the state, but it’s still money that is owed to me. I paid my bills on time,” said Allen.
He also knows there are many others anxiously awaiting their refund checks
“A lot of people count on that as part of their income each year to get money back that was owed to them anyways,” said Allen.
