Officials are asking for the public's assistance in identifying those responsible for detonating a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near a Raymore police car on Thursday afternoon.

At 12:30 p.m., a suspect threw what officials believe to be a small explosive device in the direction of a Raymore police car traveling westbound on Highway 58.

Officials said the device detonated on the pavement of the highway. The officer was not injured and the patrol vehicle was not damaged.

Nicole Gilkison was home when the device detonated. Initially, she thought she heard a car crash until she walked outside and saw police cars up and down the street.

“It was kind of muffled. It wasn’t necessarily that loud where it shook the house,” she told 41 Action News.

Her neighbor across the street, Destry Kearney, was also home.

“There was ATF, our undercover officers, our street officers,” he said. “It’s crazy, especially this close to my house.”

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Raymore police are asking anyone in the area of 58 Highway and Campbell to speak up.

There is a reward up to $5,000 leading to an arrest or conviction in the case, officials said.

Anyone with information about this crime can also contact ATF by email ATFTips@atf.gov, through its website at www.atf.gov/contact/atftips or text 63975 using the code ATFKC.
