KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A University of Central Missouri student was killed when a firearm accidentally discharged at an on-campus apartment, and one student has been arrested, the university said Tuesday.

Around 3:30 p.m. Monday, the UCM Department of Public Safety responded to an accidental discharge of a firearm at the apartment.

Stephon Abron, of St. Charles, died in the incident, the university said.

One student was arrested on a count of involuntary manslaughter, the university said. It was not immediately clear if that student had been charged.

The university said there was no ongoing threat to the community.

The Johnson County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office and Warrensburg Police Department are working with UCM Public Safety to investigate the incident.

“The UCM community is saddened by this tragedy,” UCM said in a statement. "The university will offer assistance through the counseling center to students who may need support."
