SEDALIA, Mo. — According to the Internal Revenue Service, around 88 million Americans have received their stimulus checks, but many are still waiting.

One Sedalia family is worried their check, which should cover both parents and two children, will be deposited into the wrong bank account.

Shquina Shannon said when she went to check the status of her stimulus check, she saw a message that says it will be deposited April 29 into a bank account that is not hers. She's been trying to get in touch with the IRS to get answers, but she hasn't had any luck.

"It's very, very frustrating because there's nothing we can do," Shannon said. "It's out of our control, we can't do anything but pray about it. We can't get ahold of anybody."

Shannon said Social Security payments are her only source of income, which is why she filed a non-filer form. She said the form had her updated bank account information on it. She thinks there was a mix-up with the IRS that caused a different bank account to be listed as hers.

The family planned on using the check for food, bills and a needed washer and dryer.

"We pack clothes up and do eight loads of laundry every single week at a laundry mat," Shannon said.

For people who have gotten their check, like Blue Springs resident Amy Martin, it's a weight lifted off their shoulders. Martin needed to use her check to pay for new tags and the sales tax on a car after hers broke down.

"I feel a lot better, especially knowing I have that extra cushion of money there as well just in case something does happen with my new car," Martin said.

Martin said the wait to get her check was stressful.

"I was like, did I not qualify, are they going to take it away because I still owe student loans," Martins said.

Now, Shannon is feeling the same anxiety, waiting for April 29 and hoping the check ends up in her account.

"We've been making it and getting the bills paid and everything, but we were still depending on that money," Shannon said.

According to the IRS website, a person cannot change their bank account information if the GetMyPayment app shows a payment is pending or has been processed.
