KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Although it's a work in progress, around this time next month therapists in Kansas City, Missouri, will have another location to see patients.
Space KC, located at East 31st and Oak streets, is the first coworking space for mental health professionals co-founded by Mehgan Flynn.
"Not only to have a nice adequate space, but also to have that built-in network of other therapists that they can ask questions of, or get support from referrals from," Flynn told 41 Action News.
Flynn, who also launched a similar concept for nonprofits two years ago, sought advice from therapists like Jae Edgar Bennett, founder of Street Medicine KC.
"Most therapists when they graduate and they finish their 2,000 hours, they're primarily like lost," said Bennett, also a partner at Space KC. "They've been a therapist for many years or practice again, but what's the business aspect for it?"
Bennett said the need now is even greater, citing the trauma that the coronavirus pandemic can cause.
"It's very important for us to have this this facility and the space for individuals to actually do more practice," Bennett said.
Space KC's 34 HIPPA-compliant therapy rooms overlooking Martini Corner can be leased or booked for a half or a full-day.
"If a therapist only practices one or two days a week, they shouldn't be paying for a space full time," Flynn said.
And Bennett said both the space itself and the times amid the pandemic are unique.
"One of the challenges is, 'How do we get people in the offices, right?' They still want to do it and not just tele-mental health."
