KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sales have been spiking at Nebraska Furniture Mart since the retail giant reopened its Kansas City, Kansas, location after a brief shutdown due to stay-at-home orders in effect to stop the spread of COVID-19.

As a result, Ethan Stover, the store director, said he needs 70 new employees to work in the warehouse.

This week, the company is launching a virtual job hiring event. For the first time in the company’s history, it will offer jobs on the spot after video interviews.

“These are processes we implemented and refined when the showrooms were closed and now we’re getting to put them into practice,” Stover said. “We find the efficiency is incredible for us. It’s better for us as an organization, it’s better for the candidates and it really gives the candidate more control over the interview process.”

Stover said Nebraska Furniture Mart is hiring receiving staff, furniture prep and touch-up technicians, customer pickup staff members, machine operators and other positions.

The full-time jobs are permanent and come with benefits like a 401(k), health insurance and an employee discount. Stover said jobs pay between $15 and $19 an hour depending on the position and the candidate's experience.

He said the right candidate should be up for a challenge and work well in a team environment.

“Right now, we’re starting to see the manufacturers catch up with delays in manufacturing and production. All of that product is starting to slowly trickle in. We want to make sure we’re prepared for that so customers can get the product as quickly as possible once the manufacturer ships it to us,” Stover explained.

The online hiring fair began Tuesday. Visit the career section of the website to review job openings and submit an application. Take a virtual tour of the company's warehouse by watching a video.
