KANSAS CITY, Mo. — From online personal shoppers and cashiers to the meat department and more, Hy-Vee has about 200 jobs open in their stores across the Kansas City area.
Those who already work for the grocery store chain say the opportunities are endless.
“I started here years and years ago as a bagger,” said Liberty Hy-Vee store manager Brenda Slivinski about the chance to grow a job at Hy-Vee into a career. “You can just work your way up. There are lots of opportunities. In our store alone, we have minimum 12 employees that have worked at Hy-Vee for well over 30 years.”
Kathy Weaver’s days as an online personal shopper at Hy-Vee are busy.
“You learn where everything in the store is,” she laughed. “If I’ve got like six orders, it could take me 45 minutes to an hour.”
Weaver, a pre-school teacher, has started working at Hy-Vee as an online personal shopper since the pandemic started.
Slivinski said Hy-Vee has hired a wide range of people from displaced restaurant workers to those looking for a second career.
“When the pandemic first started, we employed approximately 40 restaurant workers and they all came and most of them worked Aisles Online," she explained. “Retired teachers or people that have been in a different industry that come to us, it’s a great industry to work in.”
Jobs like online personal shopping vary by store but can come with flexible hours.
“At our store, it's 24 hours a day, so we have shifts open throughout every daypart,” Slivinski said. “We have several parents that shop online shopping for us and it works great with their schedule because we do have so many shifts available. We do have weekends. We do have overnight. There’s just a lot of opportunity for hours.”
And there is no experience with the task needed.
“It’s about attitude first. So we hire great attitudes and we train the rest," Slivinski added.
Slivinski said full-time jobs include medical and dental benefits as well as bonus programs. All employees get a 10 percent discount, and sometimes 20 percent as well as additional holiday pay.
Available Hy-Vee jobs can be found on their website.
