KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Three Chiefs players were back in action at practice on Wednesday.
For the first time since being placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list in mid-October, fullback Anthony Sherman returned to the field with his teammates. He's one of the longest tenured Chiefs, according to Head Coach Andy Reid.
Chiefs Kingdom expressed its excitement on Twitter after hearing "the Sausage" was back – especially after Sherman helped create one of Kansas City's top highlights.
Andy Reid's trick play called "Smoked Sauasage" featured Sherman catch an underhanded touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes in September against the Baltimore Ravens.
Wide receiver Sammy Watkins also made his return. Reid said Watkins "will get some work in" as the team monitors the seven-year NFL vet. When it comes to the work Watkins is able to produce Wednesday, Reid said they will "see how he does."
The wide receiver has been out since he injured his hamstring back in Week Five's match up against the Las Vegas Raiders. Before the injury, the former Clemson Tiger was having a successful season with 21 receptions for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
In addition to Sherman and Watkins, Rookie Cornerback L'Jarius Sneed will also "be out getting some work in," according to Reid.
Sneed was placed on the Injured Reserve list after breaking his collarbone during Week 3 in the Chiefs 34-20 win over the Ravens. In his two short full games with the Chiefs, the fourth-round draft pick had two interceptions.
The Louisanna Tech grad started all three games with the Chiefs while depth in the secondary ran thin. Cornerback Bashaud Breeland was out the first four games serving a suspension, while Cornerback Charvarius Ward played with a fractured hand. Sneed's return will be welcomed as the rookie provides more depth. However, whether or not he will play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers at Kansas City still is up in the air.
Defensive End Frank Clark did not practice Wednesday due to a swollen knee, but "should be OK," according to Reid. Right Tackle Mitchell Schwartz also did not practice due to a back injury he's been nursing since Week Six. The veteran offensive lineman left mid-game in Buffalo when the Chiefs defeated the Bills 26-17. Schwartz has not practiced since Oct. 17.
