After the rain postponed ALCS game 3 on Monday, crews worked to make sure the field was dry and ready to play on Tuesday.
Trevor Vance, the Royals' head grounds keeper explained what it took to prepare the field, despite more than an inch of rain falling the day before.
"This field is built on sand and when it was built, this field can take up to 20 inches of rain an hour so drainage is not a problem," he said. "The outfield, the sidelines, everything it'll drain right through as long as it's not raining, you can play baseball."
Tuesday afternoon was sunny but very windy. That actually, Vance explained, is an advantage for the ground crew.
"Some of the areas where the tarp was not on, it was helping dry that out," he said "And then the areas that were covered, we were able to water those this morning and it's helping us dry that out. So the wind's not hurting us at all right now."
The infield can be tricky with rain, because the tarp needs to cover the dirt but can suffocate the grass. So Vance worried about not enough water.
"That was one of our biggest concerns because with this wind if we don't water it then you're going to start getting the hot spots, the dry spots and that would look kind of crazy after an inch and a half of rain," said Vance.
The twelve person crew made sure the crown in the outfield looked perfect, the infield was watered and the grass cut clean.
For Vance, there was a lot on the line.
"That was one of our biggest concerns cause with this wind if we don't water it then you're going to start getting the hot spots, the dry spots and that would look kind of crazy after an inch and a half of rain."
