KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs found a cheaper replacement for Cam Erving and added depth at offensive tackle in the third round Friday of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Kansas City selected TCU’s Lucas Niang after releasing Erving earlier this offseason.

He’s an athletic prospect, which fits the Chiefs’ preferred mold for the offensive line because of his superior athleticism.

Niang is able to move well, engage blocks in space and combo to the second level with above-average foot speed.

He isn’t likely to supplant either of Kansas City’s entrenched starting tackles in 2020, but Niang provides a quality developmental prospect. He also could compete for a spot on the interior of the line at one of the guard spots in the interim, Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach said.

Left tackle Eric Fisher is under contract through the 2021 season and carries a cap number of $14.6 million and $14.9 million each of the next two seasons, according to Over the Cap.

Right tackle Mitchell Schwartz also is under contract through 2021. He carries a $10.5 million cap number this season and $10 million cap number next season.
