KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland was released from a South Carolina jail late Tuesday on bond after his arrest on several charges, including resisting arrest.

According to a probable cause report from the York County Sheriff’s Office, Breeland, 28, was smoking marijuana with two other men at a gas station in Fort Mill, about 20 miles outside of Charlotte, when a deputy pulled up to a gas pump in a marked vehicle. The three men tried to leave but returned when the deputy called them back.

The deputy saw one of the men throw a blunt into Breeland’s vehicle, according to the probable cause report. The deputy also could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The deputy told Breeland that he was being detained, and he allegedly tried to flee. The deputy attempted to handcuff Breeland, who continued to pull away and then tried to push the deputy, according to the report.

At that point, the deputy pulled out his Taser and continued to give Breeland commands to comply.

Breeland “continued to resist and attempted to get in his vehicle and leave,” according to the report. Breeland was able to get in his vehicle, at which point the deputy could no longer see both of his hands.

Because Breeland “was not following lawful orders,” the deputy drew his firearm and continued to give commands to Breeland, who then put his hands in the air, according to the report.

For the next three minutes, Breeland continued to resist arrest while onlookers nearby “pleaded with him to stop,” according to the report.

The deputy was able to handcuff Breeland and search his vehicle, where a large blunt was found, along with 3.2 grams of marijuana, two open bottles of beer and an open bottle of tequila, according to the report.

Breeland allegedly told the deputy that one of the other men threw a blunt into his car and that he had tried to conceal it when he saw the deputy.

The Chiefs player also consented to a search of his phone, where the deputy saw “several messages” arranging orders of marijuana in bags similar to those found in his vehicle.

According to the report, Breeland told the deputy that the deals were not made in York County and that “he liked to smoke marijuana and was a marijuana enthusiast.”

Breeland was transported to the jail and booked on charges of resisting arrest, transporting alcohol with a broken seal, open container in a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, and driving without a license.

A spokesperson for the York County Sheriff’s Office said Breeland was released around 11 p.m. Tuesday on a $2,362.50 bond.

In a letter obtained by 41 Action News, Strom Law Firm, of Columbia, S.C., stated that it is representing Breeland. The law firm will review body camera footage from the incident.

"At the time of his encounter with law enforcement, Mr. Breeland was leaving a gas station store after making a lawful purchase. Moments after returning to his vehicle, a 2020 Range Rover with valid temporary paper tags, law enforcement officers approached Mr. Breeland and drew their weapons," the letter stated.

Breeland, a South Carolina native, tweeted overnight that he was approached by two men at a gas pump who threw something in his car when police pulled up.

“I’m not fighting to clear a name I don’t care wat people think I know the truth innocent until proven guilty,” Breeland said in a tweet early Wednesday, which later appeared to have been deleted.

A representative for the Chiefs said the team was aware of the charges against Breeland but declined further comment.

Breeland, who is entering his seventh season in the NFL, signed with Kansas City before the 2019 season and solidified the outside cornerback spot for the eventual Super Bowl champions.

He finished with 48 tackles (37 solo) and also had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, including one returned the length of the field for a touchdown at Detroit.

Breeland started 15 of 16 games and resigned earlier this month on a one-year deal reportedly worth $4.5 million. He played for Washington and Green Bay prior to signing with the Chiefs.
